Let’s Learn and Talk About Everything, For Real!

52 Books In 52 Weeks

Today I officially took the challenge to read 52 books over a 52-week period. I have always been a reader. In fact most of my prized possessions are my books! Though I don’t fancy calling myself a bookworm, I am oftentimes referred to as such. Urban Dictionary’s definition of a bookworm (“a person who is so fascinated by books that he does not know what is happening in the world”) made me smile. This is how my Mom usually describes me. I also remember her grabbing from me whatever I’m reading (usually Pilipino Funny Komiks*) so I can run her errands. I guess I’m a bookworm in that sense.

My self-imposed challenge came about when I was dusting off one of our bookshelves and saw the still unread books I bought a couple of years ago – shame on me. Tashi happens to own a bunch of really good books too. Besides, I really need to get back to reading. I realized that ever since I got here in the US, my love for reading has waned. Blame it on video games and Facebook!

In meeting my challenge, I plan to read first the books that I/we already own. For the rest of the books, I have yet to decide if I will buy or just borrow them from the library. Aside from the challenge of keeping up with the ‘1 book per week’ schedule (I am a slow reader), the biggest challenge will be applying what I read which would certainly take a lifetime.

Most of my books are about personal development, leadership, finance and management. I’m not a big fan of novels so don’t ask me about Anna Karenina, Don Quixote and The Three Musketeers.

As of this writing, I am almost done reading Deepak Chopra’s “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success”. I haven’t decided yet on what to read next. I’m thinking “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff . . . and It’s All Small Stuff: Simple Ways to Keep the Little Things from Taking Over Your Life” by Richard Carlson would be a good one.

If you would like to suggest books for me to read I would be glad to hear from you!
