T.A.K.E. Defense

“This isn’t about violence. This is about self-defense. You have to be willing to fight back” says Bob, one of the trainers and everyone’s favorite “bad guy”,  at the two-hour T.A.K.E. Defense training that I attended today at the Kauffman Stadium.IMG_2743

This is actually the first time I learned about T.A.K.E. (The Ali Kemp Educational) Foundation and it’s program so I did a little researching and found this information:

The T.A.K E. Defense program represents a living legacy in honor of Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old Leawood, KS resident who was murdered while working as a lifeguard at a neighborhood pool in Johnson County. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and to give women ages 12 and older the self-protection skills they need to avoid becoming the victims of violent crime. Our oldest participant has been 86 years old! Participants will learn basic self-defense techniques, which could save their lives. – http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/kc/community/take_defense.js

The program was very informative and fun at the same time. Roger Kemp, Ali’s dad was also there. After the introductions and a little background about the program, we all headed out to the field and trained with our friends on how to defend ourselves.IMG_2774

Jill Leiker, a martial-arts expert led the training. She gave us pointers and demonstrated several ways on how to defend ourselves and get away from a perpetrator. img_2748.jpg
