After visiting our dearly departed relatives, we then proceeded to one of Legaspi City’s popular tourist spots, Cagsawa Ruins Park. There’s really not much to do here but see the world’s most perfect cone shaped volcano, Mount Mayon and what remains of Cagsawa Church after the 1814 eruption of the volcano. I wanted the kids, Urielle, Nina, Chinirah and Little Tashi to learn about the history of the ruins.
In February 1, 1814, Mayon Volcano caused its most violent and deadly eruption that engulfed the surrounding houses and killed nearly 2,000 people who took refuge inside the church. Only the belfry of the Cagsawa church remains as a grim and silent testimony of that fateful day. – wikipedia.com
Our visit to Bicol will not be complete without having a stopover at the famous Cagsawa ruins. The park is not as pretty as it used to be but there are still a lot of visitors. I saw the pool where we used to go swimming. Unfortunately, it didn’t look like someone was maintaining the pool. It looked dirty and abandoned. My Mom used to go to this park whenever we would visit our relatives in Bicol to shop for souvenirs. This place offers a variety of beautifully handmade purses, slippers, fans, etc.
