It’s Padir’s birthday today. This year’s family get together was a surprise for him. I didn’t tell him I would still be visiting them after I cancelled my trip in April for Madir’s first year death anniversary.
He picked the beautiful Bicol, his and Madir’s birthplace, when I asked him where he’d like to celebrate his birthday. He said he wanted to go to Bicol and be with Madir’s family and relatives.

Padir’s birthday served as a reunion for Mama’s relatives. It was so good to see everyone again especially Mama’s siblings. So many things have changed. One thing hasn’t. Their love and respect for each other. You see, my Mama’s siblings are the most loving and respectful I’ve ever known. Some people will find it hard to believe but it’s true. They never fought. We’ve never seen them argue. I remember Madir used to say she wondered why and where we got it from whenever Kevin and I would argue because she and her siblings never did. I adore my Grandparents for raising very respectful and obedient children. They’re one of a kind.

I met new members of the family for the first time today. My cousins’ children are all grown. Some, surprisingly have started their own families too.
We’ve shared lots of laughter. Some tears too, especially when we talked about Mama and how much we’ve missed her.

It felt fulfilling to see we made Papa happy. I know he would have been happier if Mama’s still with us.
